Performance
The base engine that comes standard with the Tacoma is a 2.7-liter inline-4 that makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. This base engine comes standard with rear-wheel drive and also makes all-wheel drive an optional upgrade. The 2022 Tacoma also makes a 3.5-liter V6 engine available, which provides quite a power improvement over the 2.7-liter inline-4 engine. The 3.5-liter V6 engine makes 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque while offering a choice between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The base 2.7-liter inline-4 engine works with a 6-speed automatic transmission while the V6 engine offers the choice between a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual transmission. Additional performance features come attached to various trim levels, with the off-road trims providing the most in the way of additional performance. Some of the TRD models come with special FOX shock absorbers, TRD springs, a terrain response system, crawl control, and multi-terrain monitoring.

The TRD Off-Road trim packs in even more performance thanks to features like lockable rear differential, Bilstein shock absorbers, and an advanced off-road traction control system with rock crawl. The Limited trim does a good job of combining interior features with off-road capability. The Limited trim includes a sunroof, a JBL premium audio system, a navigation system, rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera system. The TRD Pro is the most off-road capable out of the entire lineup thanks to features like a thicker front skid plate, FOX internal bypass shock absorbers, an upgraded exhaust, increased approach, and an off-road suspension. The TRD Pro also includes some impressive interior features, like a JBL premium audio system, a navigation system, a sunroof, and increased driver assistance features.
