Toyota Safety Sense

How Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) Works to Make Roads Safer all over the Westminster

Every time we step into a vehicle, we are taking a risk. You, as the driver, accept that you can only control your car -- and even then, human error can sometimes exasperate a problem. Some risks are bigger than others, like speeding around a racetrack, while others are par for the course, like navigating stop-and-go traffic during rush hour in Baltimore.

Toyota has long been a leader in automotive safety, and the latest systems work to maintain the brand's industry-leading standing. Toyota's safety features work to combat the unpredictability of the road ahead by ... well, predicting and reacting autonomously to keep not only the driver of the vehicle but other drivers on the road safer. It's called Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS), and it's a suite of advanced safety systems that use various cameras and sensors to predict and help to prevent impending collisions.

You can find out more about the many components of TSS below:

Auto High Beams

  • Increases visibility for nighttime driving
  • Spots the headlights of oncoming vehicles using a camera
  • Toggles between low and high beams as necessary

Lane Departure Alert

  • Works with the driver to help maintain the intended path of travel
  • Uses a specialized camera to identify painted lines on the road
  • Emits visual and audible alerts when the vehicle drifts out of its lane

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

  • Enhances the conventional cruise control system with a preset following distance to avoid collisions
  • Utilizes forward-sensing radar technology and a camera to avoid collisions
  • Monitors the speed and distance of the vehicle ahead
  • Adjusts speed of your vehicle accordingly to maintain preset following distance

Pre-Collision System

  • Uses a camera and forward-facing radar to avoid frontal collisions
  • Sends audible and visual alerts in the event of a potential frontal collision
  • Administers braking assistance to begin evasive measures
  • Applies full braking power should the driver fail to respond in a timely manner

Pedestrian Detection

  • Uses a camera with shape recognition capabilities as well as millimeter-wave radar to scan for pedestrians in the vehicle's path
  • Warns driver of an impending collision with a pedestrian by giving audible and visual notifications
  • Reverts to Pre-Collision System to apply full braking power is driver does not react

Come 2018, TSS will be standard across the entire Toyota lineup. In the meantime, the sales team here at Koons Westminster Toyota can show you which new Toyota comes equipped with TSS technologies, and they can help you select which model is right for you. Providing TSS-equipped vehicles to drivers all over the Westminster, Hanover, Rockville, Frederick and Baltimore is one way we work to make roads safer where you and your family travel.
